Causes Of Incontinence
We are driven by a deep commitment to improving the lives of individuals with incontinence needs.

Causes of Incontinence
Incontinence refers to the unintentional or involuntary release of urine from the bladder (known as urinary incontinence) or the accidental passage of bowel movements, feces, or gas from the bowel.
It is a condition characterized by the inability to control these bodily functions effectively.
This loss of control can lead to unexpected leaks or accidents, which can cause physical discomfort, emotional distress, and impact an individual’s overall quality of life.
Incontinence can vary in severity and may result from various underlying causes, such as weakened pelvic muscles, nerve damage, hormonal changes, or certain medical conditions.
Proper management and appropriate incontinence products can help individuals regain confidence, maintain hygiene, and live life to the fullest, despite the challenges posed by incontinence.
Cause Of Incontinence
Certain drinks, foods and medication can act as diuretics – stimulating your bladder and increasing your volume of urine.
Caffeine
Drinks such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, and certain sodas that contain caffeine can act as diuretics, increasing urine production and potentially exacerbating incontinence symptoms.
Alcohol
Alcohol is a known diuretic, which means it increases urine production and can irritate the bladder, leading to increased urgency and potential leakage.
Spicy Foods
Alcohol is a known diuretic, which means it increases urine production and can irritate the bladder, leading to increased urgency and potential leakage.
Carbonated Beverages
Carbonated drinks, including soda or sparkling water, can contribute to incontinence by causing bladder irritation or increasing the urgency to urinate.
Artificial Sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners, commonly found in sugar-free products like diet sodas, can irritate the bladder and potentially trigger incontinence episodes in sensitive individuals.
Citrus Fruits
Alcohol is a known diuretic, which means it increases urine production and can irritate the bladder, leading to increased urgency and potential leakage.
Tomato-Based Products
Foods like tomatoes, tomato sauce, or tomato juice contain high levels of acidity, which can irritate the bladder and contribute to incontinence.
Acidic Foods
Acidic foods like onions, garlic, vinegar, and certain dressings or sauces can potentially irritate the bladder and exacerbate incontinence symptoms in some individuals.
Persistent Urinary Incontinence
Persistent urinary incontinence can be caused by underlying physical problem or changes, including;
Pregnancy/Childbirth: Hormonal Changes and extra weight carried during pregnancy can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, ligaments, and bladder. During Pregnancy hormones are released to soften the muscles in the pelvic floor in order to ease childbirth. This can weaken the pelvic floor muscles and lengthen the tissues permanently. Therefore, pregnancy and childbirth are also one of the risks for incontinence problems.
Menopause: When experiencing menopause women will produce less estrogen hormone and it will weaken the tissues of the urinary tract and causes women to have less control of their bladders.
Hysterectomy: A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of a woman’s uterus. Hysterectomy can potentially lead to female incontinence due to the anatomical changes and alterations in pelvic support that result from the removal of the uterus and surrounding structures.
Enlarged Prostate: An enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a condition that affects many aging men. The prostate gland, which surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body), can gradually enlarge over time due to hormonal changes and other factors.
Urinary Flow Obstruction: The prostate gland enlarges, and urinary stones or tumors will exert pressure on the urethra, causing a partial obstruction of the urinary flow.
Natural Aging: With aging, the muscles and tissues that support the bladder and urethra can weaken and lose elasticity.
Neurological Disorder: Neurological disorders are conditions that affect the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves throughout the body. These can be due to multiple sclerosis, stroke, dementia, diabetes, Parkinson’s, brain tumor, or a brain injury.
Medications: Medications while often designed to treat various medical conditions, can sometimes have unintended side effects, including those related to urinary function and incontinence.
